Thatai is a traditional dish, we South Indians, usually prepare for festivals, especially the Krishna Jayanthi festival.
This time around the thatai's came very well, hence I thought I would record the recipe :-)
Ingredients :
Rice Flour -2 Cups
Urad Dal Flour - 2 tbsp
Potukadalai Flour - 2 tbsp
Aesofotida - 1 tsp
Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Channa Dal - 1 tbsp
Urad Dal - 1 tbsp
Butter - 2 tbsp
Salt per taste
Oil for frying
Serves - 6 - 8 People
Preparation :
Soak the channa dal and urad dal for 1 hour.
- Wash handful of curry leaves and place in a bowl, along with salt, chilli powder, aesofotida and mix well.
- Add in rice flour ( after repeated sieving to get fine flour ) to this mixture.
- Add in the soaked dals.
- Pour in water gradually and knead to a smooth stiff dough.
- Grease the dough with 2 tbsp butter.
- Keep aside for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, take a transparent sheet and grease the sheet with oil.
- Ball the dough.
- Place the ball on the sheet, flatten with hand or bottom of a round vessel.
- Allow oil to get heated up on a wide pan.
- Prick the spread dough with fork, if needed press the flattened spread with fingers once again, and dip them in hot oil.
- Cook them in medium heat by tossing them on both sides until they are crispy.
