Thatai is a traditional dish, we South Indians, usually prepare for festivals, especially the Krishna Jayanthi festival.
This time around the thatai's came very well, hence I thought I would record the recipe :-)

Oil for frying

Serves - 6 - 8 People

Preparation :

Soak the channa dal and urad dal for 1 hour.
  • Wash handful of curry leaves and place in a bowl, along with salt, chilli powder, aesofotida and mix well.
  • Add in rice flour ( after repeated sieving to get fine flour ) to this mixture.
  • Add in the soaked dals.
  • Pour in water gradually and knead to a smooth stiff dough.
  • Grease the dough with 2 tbsp butter.
  • Keep aside for 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, take a transparent sheet and grease the sheet with oil.
  • Ball the dough.
  • Place the ball on the sheet, flatten with hand or bottom of a round vessel.

  • Allow oil to get heated up on a wide pan.
  • Prick the spread dough with fork, if needed press the flattened spread with fingers once again, and dip them in hot oil.
  • Cook them in medium heat by tossing them on both sides until they are crispy.
